Narratives

Writers telling stories through essay of depression -- can it get any better than this?

Undercurrents is a fantastic journal by a writer, depressed. "This work takes the reader through the experience of Clinical Major Depression vividly. Lyrical prose describes a wonderful person beset with a horrible disease."

"Combining a scholar's care and thoroughness with searing personal insight, Karp brings the private experience of depression into sharp relief, drawing on a remarkable series of intimate interviews with 50 depressed men and women. This important book pierces through the terrifying isolation of depression to uncover the connections linking the depressed as they undertake their personal journeys."

I know, I know, another writer writing about depression.  But Elizabeth Wurtzel has got to be my favorite.  She is just like me or you, and her story is very easy to read.  I felt like I could completely relate to her.  She bares all, hides nothing, and has a fascinating story to tell.

A writer, depression, creativity, loss of creativity, getting creativity back, what is creativity anyway?

"Robin Hemley relates the poignant story of his brilliant but schizophrenic sister, Nola, who died at age 25. But it is more than just her story; this is a tender examination of a talented life lost too soon, and of a family that loved each other desperately, despite the pain that Nola's illness cost them all."  Really it is about art and madness.  I promise.

This is the one masterpiece you absolutely must get.  It is an existential masterpiece about finding yourself, and what our place is in this wide, wide world.  This book has changed my life, even though technically it does not deal with depression.  It deals with BEING.  If you pop on over to your used book store, please make certain to get the translation by DAVID YOUNG.  Otherwise, what is the point?
