new year 2000

We were sitting on the sofa, smoking things we shouldn't be smoking, drinking things we shouldn't be drinking, and talking of inappropriate things.

They were all around us, the glamour girls and boys with their tiaras and feather boas, and meaningless conversations.

We drank more, their movements got faster, and their looks toward the reflective surfaces became less frequent.  or maybe we just stopped noticing.

You and I never look in the mirror.  we say it is because we do not care, because we are so far beyond the superficiality of appearances, but we both know that is not the truth.

The night wore on and the shiny clothing became blurs of light swirling all around us, darting in and out of the other rooms...I couldn't even remember if there were other rooms.  I just knew the room we were in, you and me, on the sofa, out of sight.

Were we out of sight, or did we just not care, in our baggy clothes and unkempt hair?

I always thought you were beautiful.  much more beautiful than the glamour girls and boys who care too much, and think too little.
